PRESS RELEASE

Honorary Bailiff or Steward of Ennerdale

An Honorary Distinction Granted by George Mentz, Lord of the Bailiwick of Ennerdale

The honorary title of Honorary Bailiff of Ennerdale or Honorary Steward of Ennerdale is granted by George Mentz, Lord of the Bailiwick of Ennerdale, to recognize distinguished service, personal achievement, and a commitment to the welfare of others.

The distinction celebrates the ideals of stewardship: integrity, responsibility, generosity, and the thoughtful preservation of heritage. It honors individuals whose contributions to their communities, professions, or charitable endeavors reflect these values.

The Meaning of Bailiff and Steward

The traditional terms bailiff and steward evoke positions of trust, care, and responsibility. As honorary designations, they express appreciation for individuals who demonstrate sound judgment, principled leadership, and service beyond personal advancement.

An Honorary Bailiff of Ennerdale is recognized for qualities of integrity, dependable leadership, and public or community service.

An Honorary Steward of Ennerdale is recognized for contributions reflecting care for people, institutions, cultural heritage, education, or the natural environment.

Both designations carry the same central message: meaningful achievement is strengthened by a willingness to serve.

Recognition of Service and Achievement

The award may recognize contributions in fields such as:

  • Charitable work and humanitarian service.

  • Education, scholarship, and mentorship.

  • Professional leadership and ethical enterprise.

  • Community service and civic participation.

  • Historical preservation, arts, and cultural heritage.

  • Conservation and environmental stewardship.

Recipients are honored for the substance of their contributions and the example they set for others.

Granted by George Mentz

George Mentz, Lord of the Bailiwick of Ennerdale, grants this honorary distinction as a personal recognition of merit and service. His work as an international lawyer, educator, author, and business leader informs an emphasis on ethical leadership, lifelong learning, and contribution to the wider community.

The award brings these values together under the name of Ennerdale, connecting recognition of contemporary achievement with the enduring ideal of stewardship.

Nature of the Honor

The designation is an honorary, ceremonial distinction. It does not confer governmental authority, judicial powers, property rights, a peerage, or an operational appointment as bailiff or steward.

Recipients may describe the award using the designation granted to them:

Honorary Bailiff of Ennerdale
or
Honorary Steward of Ennerdale

When identifying the award in a biography or professional profile, recipients may add: “Granted by George Mentz, Lord of the Bailiwick of Ennerdale, in recognition of service and achievement.”

Celebrating the Spirit of Stewardship

The Honorary Bailiff and Honorary Steward distinctions celebrate those who use their abilities to benefit others. Through this recognition, George Mentz honors the belief that leadership carries a responsibility to serve, preserve, and contribute.

Integrity in leadership. Generosity in service. Responsibility in stewardship.

Colonel Tan Choong Han Conferred the Historic Dignity of Bailiff of Ennerdale

Singapore, 2 October 2026
Colonel Tan Choong Han has been conferred the distinguished dignity of Bailiff of Ennerdale, an appointment associated with the historic Lordship, Manor and Bailiwick of Ennerdale in Cumbria, England.

The conferment was made under the authority of Lord George Mentz, Lord of the Manor and Liberty of Ennerdale and High Bailiff of Ennerdale, whose stewardship encompasses the preservation of the heritage, traditions and ceremonial offices connected with this ancient English lordship.

The official Ennerdale record lists Colonel Tan among those appointed as Honorary Bailiffs by Lord George Mentz. The same record describes the office of the High Bailiff as encompassing ceremonial leadership, preservation of the Bailiwick’s arms, seals and regalia, heritage stewardship and the appointment of ceremonial officers in accordance with the traditions associated with historic English liberties.

The conferment recognises Colonel Tan’s continuing commitment to service, leadership, community engagement and the preservation of heritage and tradition.

A Bridge Between Ennerdale and Asia

Instrumental in supporting and strengthening the relationship surrounding the Ennerdale appointments has been The Right Worshipful Tan Seri Professor Dr Sean Rozario, KStJ, himself named by Lord George Mentz as an Honorary Bailiff of Ennerdale.

Tan Seri Prof Dr Sean Rozario has played an important role in supporting the development of relationships between the Lordship and distinguished individuals in Asia, helping to foster greater understanding of Ennerdale’s historical traditions while encouraging the values of service, fellowship, cultural preservation and international goodwill.

His involvement reflects a broader commitment to building bridges between historic institutions and contemporary civic and humanitarian leadership.

Lord George Mentz and the Continuing Tradition of Ennerdale

Lord George Mentz serves as the present Lord of Ennerdale and High Bailiff. The Lordship’s published history traces the Bailiwick’s administrative traditions through centuries of English history and records historic office-holders associated with the Percy and Lowther families, among others.

Under Lord Mentz’s stewardship, the contemporary Bailiwick continues to emphasise the preservation of history, heritage, nature, ceremonial tradition and public service.

The appointment of Colonel Tan Choong Han therefore represents not simply the receipt of a title, but entry into a continuing tradition linking the history of Ennerdale with a modern international community committed to service and heritage.

Colonel Tan Choong Han said:

“I am deeply honoured and humbled to receive the dignity of Bailiff of Ennerdale from Lord George Mentz. I accept this distinction with profound respect for the history and traditions that it represents, and with a commitment to uphold the values of service, heritage and goodwill associated with Ennerdale.”

He also expressed his appreciation to Tan Seri Professor Dr Sean Rozario, KStJ, for his friendship, encouragement and instrumental support in fostering the relationship that culminated in this distinguished recognition.

A Tradition Carried Forward

The conferment brings together three individuals united by a shared belief that historic honours carry their greatest meaning when accompanied by service.

For Lord George Mentz, it represents the continuation of Ennerdale’s ancient traditions.

For Colonel Tan Choong Han, it marks a new chapter of responsibility and association with one of England’s historic lordships.

And through the support of Tan Seri Prof Dr Sean Rozario, KStJ, it further strengthens the growing bonds of friendship, heritage and service between Ennerdale and Asia.

The ancient traditions of Ennerdale endure, not merely through history recorded on parchment, but through those entrusted to carry their spirit into a new generation.
